The Board of Directors of the Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce voted unanimously earlier this year to
honor William S. Stavropoulos
as its 2000 Man of the Year. Mr Stavropoulos has been the President and Chief Executive
Officer of the Dow Chemical Company since 1995,
and is a leading
member of the Hellenic-American business community. The Chamber
will present the award to Dr Stavropoulos at its 52nd
Annual
Dinner Dance, to be held on Friday, October 20, 2000, at the
Metropolitan Club of New York.
William S. Stavropoulos is President and
Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company and Chairman
of the Executive Committee
and the Corporate Leadership Team.
Stavropoulos has been a member of the Board of Directors of
Dow since July 1990. He serves on the
Finance and Environment,
Health, Safety and Public Policy Committees and the Committee
on Directors. His career with Dow began in
Indianapolis in
1967 when he joined as a research chemist in Pharmaceutical
Research. He moved to Diagnostics Product Research in 1970
and was named research manager in 1973. He was appointed Diagnostics Products business manager in 1976 and business manager of
Polyolefins in Midland in 1977.
Stavropoulos became director of marketing
for the Dow U.S.A. Plastics Department in 1979, and was named
commercial vice president for Dow Latin America
in 1980. He
then became president of Dow Latin America in 1984, and was
named commercial vice president for Dow U.S.A. Basics and
Hydrocarbons in 1985.
He became group vice president for Dow
U.S.A. Plastics and Hydrocarbons in 1987.
In 1990 Stavropoulos was named president
of Dow U.S.A. and was elected a vice president of The Dow
Chemical Company. He was then elected a senior vice
president of Dow in May 1991. to the Board of Directors of Dow Corning
Corporation in March 1991.
Stavropoulos became president and chief
operating officer in April 1993, and assumed his current position
November 1, 1995.
He is a member of the American Chemical
Society; The Business Council, acting as vice chairman and
serving on Executive and Membership Committees; The
Business
Roundtable, serving on the Policy Committee; and Society of
Chemical Industry, where he serves on the Executive Committee.
He also serves on the
Joint Automotive Suppliers Governmental
Action Council and the University of Notre Dame Advisory Council
for the College of Science.
He is a board member of American Plastics
Council; BellSouth Corporation, serving on the Audit Committee;
Chemical Financial Corporation, serving on Audit, Pension,
and Compensation Committees; Chemical Bank; Chemical Manufacturers
Association, where he serves on the Nominating Committee,
Responsible Care Committee
and Executive Committee; NCR, serving
on the Executive Committee, and as chair for the Audit and
Finance Committee; University of Washington Foundation Board;
and is a member of the board of trustees of the American Enterprise
Institute for Public Policy Research; Midland Community Center;
and U.S. Council for International
Business, serving on the
Executive Committee.
Stavropoulos holds a bachelor's degree in
pharmaceutical chemistry from Fordham University and a doctorate
in medicinal chemistry from the University of Washington.
Stavropoulos and his wife, Linda, have two
children, William and Angela.

On October 22, 1999 The
Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, held its 51st Annual
Dinner Dance. On this occasion John J. Rigas was bestowed
the Man of the Year Award for 1999. John J. Rigas is the President & CEO
of Adelphia Communications and President of each of the corporations
subsidiaries. A cable industry pioneer, Rigas
started his
first cable system in 1952 in North Central Pennsylvania.
Still headquartered in the town of Coudersport, Pennsylvania,
Adelphia serves two million subscribers in 12 states.

The Metropolitan Club of New York was filled
to its capacity with many leading members of the community
who attended the dinner to honor John J. Rigas. The
participants
included his grace Bishop Demetrios of Xanthos, Hon. Haralambos
Manesis, Consul General of Greece, Hon. Pandias Eliades, Consul
General of Cyprus, Hon.
Peter Valone, speaker of the city
of New York, Mr. John Catsimatides, A&E Television Networks,
Richard Alteri of Cable TV Association of New York, William
Bresnan of
Bresnan Communications, and Charles Dolan of Cablevision
Systems Corporation.
" I am very humble for tonight's honor
", said Mr. Rigas, " because The Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce honors through me my roots, my customs
and
traditions, and brings me so many good memories from the
past. If I had achieved something in my life it is because
of the Greek and Orthodox values that my parents
implanted
in me since I was a young boy. The Greek Civilization is the
cause and the beginning of my success. Love for my fellow
human beings and my co-workers
was my success too."
In addition to the man of the year award
The Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, awarded two University
students with the " George A. Athens " scholarship.
The two outstanding students from New York University were, Vassiliki Pappas and Constandina Kanelopoulou. The Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce,
contributed substantial proceeds towards
the charities including the Earthquake victims in Athens,
Greece, St. Basil's Academy, St. Michael's Home for the Aged,
Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies of Queens College, Ronald
McDonald House - Greek Division, Greek-American Institute,
in the Bronx, the St. Demetrios Day School
of Jamaica and
The Hellenic Nursing Home for the Aged in Canton, MA.
When the Board of Directors
of The Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, heard the terrible
news of the
earthquake in Athens, they released five thousand
dollars to the Greek Red Cross. The funds were given to the
victims who were living in tents. The Hellenic-American Chamber
of Commerce sent this donation through the
office of the Ambassador
Nicholas Burns of the United States. The Ambassador presented
the Chamber's
contribution to Mr. Andreas Martinis President
of the Hellenic Red Cross in a meeting held at the Red Cross
offices.

On November 23, 1999 over
six hundred participants gathered at the Holy Trinity Cathedral
Hall for Greek wine and food tasting. This event is the fifth
consecutive year that many importing companies exhibited wines.
Among them included Athena Importing Company, Athenae Importers
& Distributors, Inc., Fantis Foods, Inc., ITC Imports,
Nestor Imports, and Paterno Imports. The Artos Restaurant,
West Side Bistro, and Likitsakos Markets gave out samples
of Greek food to the participants.

On December 10, 1999 the members
of The Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, celebrated the
Christmas Season at the Estia Restaurant.
The Members and
their families toasted the holidays and enjoyed fine food,
music and good company.
Mrs. Dora Bakoyiannis attended
the reception given in her honor by The Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce, at the Harvard Club in New York.
Mrs. Bakogiannis, a leading member of the opposition New Democracy
Party in Greece, spoke about important political issues affecting
Greece and the
United States. She also answered questions
from the audience and showed that she is one of the bright
political stars of Greece.

Hosts a Reception-Dinner for the Speakers and the Sponsors
of the Hellenic-Norwegian Shipping Conference |

On February 2nd, 2000 the
eve of the Sixth Annual Hellenic-Norwegian Shipping Conference,
The Hon. Dimitris Platis, the new Consul General of Greece,
hosted a reception and a dinner for the sponsors and speakers
of the Shipping Conference. Among those attending were the
Consul General of Norway,
the Madam Consul of Transportation
of the Embassy of Norway, Ovind Lorentzen, President Norwegian
Chamber and Leikvoll Atta, Consul General of Norway.
Over
fifty people attended the event hosted at the Harvard Club
of New York City.
The luncheon speaker Pericles Panagopoulos,
President & CEO of Attica Enterprises, S.A. is flanked
by Demetrios Tirakis, Greek Mercantile Marine Department,
Yiannis Papadimitriou, Greek Trade Center, the Hon. Pandias
Eliades, Consul General of Cyprus, Bobby Mitropoulos, Secretary
of the Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce, Robert Shaw,
Chairman of the Shipping Conference and Chairman of the Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce.
The Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce,
and the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce, presented
an exceptionally distinguished panel of speakers
at their
6th annual joint shipping conference in New York City on February
3, 2000. The theme of the conference was " Innovation
in Shipping, New Ways to Excel
in a New Millennium ".
This joint event is steadily gaining in international reputation
for excellence and over one hundred maritime leaders who attended
this
year gave it superb reviews. The focus of the conference
was innovation in harnessing the energy created by new ideas
and technologies, and the consequent
changes in the way the
maritime industry does business. Participating speakers represented

support to the conference enabling the ticket costs to stay
at a far lower level than conferences
of comparable standard.
At the conclusion of the
Conference, Chamber member and member of the Board of Directors,
Jacq. Pierot Jr. & Sons, Inc. generously hosted the post
conference cocktail reception. Over 150 people attended the

The Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce
hosted a special reception to welcome Dimitris Platis, the
New Greek Consul General, to New York. The reception
was held on March 16th at the Presidents Room of the exclusive New
York Athletic Club.
While speaking to some 100 people in attendance,
Mr. Platis spoke on the way Greece is perceived by other European
Nations and the United States, “of late, there
is a change in the way Greece has been portrayed by the media”,
he said, “This is due primarily to changing climate
in Greece’s relations with Turkey which, on the
whole,
has received positive attention from the media”, Mr. Platis added. Mr. Platis is no stranger to the United States
and comes with an impressive list of credentials.
He is a
magna cum laude graduate of the University of Athens School
of Law; speaks four languages (English, French, Greek, Italian);
and served the Permanent
Mission of Greece at the United Nations
during the eighties. Prior to his new assignment, he was Deputy
Head of the Greek Embassy in Tirana, Albania. He began his
tenure at the Greek Consulate in New York on January 10, 2000.
On July 10, 2000 over 250
people attended a reception given by the Hellenic-American
Chamber of Commerce, the Atlantic Bank of New York and the
trade office
of the Consul General of Greece for the representatives
of the Greek food exporting companies, that exhibited their
products at the annual fancy food show at the
Jacob Javits
Center.

The Hellenic-American Chamber
of Commerce, and the Cultural Committee of the Holy Trinity
Cathedral celebrated Greek Independence Day on March 23, 2000.
The program included an inspiring address by the Hon. Dimitris
Platis, Consul General of Greece, on why we celebrate Greek
Independence. The program included
the traditional choir of
New York, under the direction of Athanasia Philiou, and the
dancing group of the Greek Cultural Center in Astoria. Exhibitions
of traditional
Greek costumes of the 18th and 19th centuries
were exhibited at the hall of the cathedral courtesy of Dr.
Mrs. John Tsiouris. Archbishop Demetrios of America
concluded
the program with an inspiring message for all Greek-Americans.
Over four hundred people enjoyed the program.

On May 9, 2000 The Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce,
held a dinner honoring the past presidents of the Chamber,
at the Presidents room of the New York
Athletic Club. The
past presidents honored were, Gregory Bookis, Emmanuel Caravanos,
Peter T. Kourides, Edward D. Hunter, Rev. Basil S. Gregory,
Stephen P.
Pendias, and Harry Papadakis.
A new Committee has been
created for the Members and friends of the Chamber that deal
with the Real Estate Businesses. The first meeting took place
on Thursday
May 18, at the Red Blazer Restaurant. The attendees
had a great time talking about Real Estate, networking and
meeting in person with people they often talk over the
phone.
On Tuesday, June 20th another meeting took place on the same
place.
On May 23, 2000 the Chamber held its annual
meeting and dinner at Avra Restaurant in New York. The meeting
is held each year for the purpose of reviewing the
Chamber's
activities and electing officers and directors for the coming
year. For the next year the following are the new Executive
Board of the Chamber,
George Kapetanakos, Chairman, Andonios
Neroulias, President, William Ioannides, Exec. Vice President,
Bobby Mitropoulos, Vice President, Andre Gregory,
Treasurer,
and John Stratakis, Secretary. The Chamber's members also
elected the ten directors to serve a 3-year term. Joining
the Board for the first time are
Marathon National Bank President,
Paul Stathoulopoulos, The Bank of Cyprus, Zaharo Sofianou,
and Attorney Mike Xylas.
The Chamber has created
a new Committee on Investments Insurance and Finance. On Tuesday
July 18th, the first business Card Exchange took place at
the Red
Blazer Restaurant. The participants had the opportunity
to meet other professionals of their field and network.
Mr. Kapetanakos is the Secretary-Treasurer
of the Southern Star Shipping Co., Inc.

For the past 20 years, the new President
of the Chamber has been involved in the ownership, operational
management, leasing and sale of
commercial and residential
real estate, primarily in the New York Metropolitan area,
as well as in other parts of the United States. Prior to
entering
the real estate business, he worked as a linguist, editor
and area officer for the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Information
Service.
Upon Graduation from the City College of
New York, with a BS degree in physics and education, he was
commissioned as an officer in the
US Army and served in active
duty for three years. He is a Vietnam War veteran and an honor
graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College
and remained in the US Army Reserve for 27 years. Among his
military awards are The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and The
Combat Infantryman Badge. He
has been a member of the Chamber
since 1979 and has previously served as Executive Vice President
and Vice President.

Sigma Coatings is part of the Total Fina
Elf group, which is the fourth largest oil company worldwide.
Sigma Coatings specializes in a
wide variety of coatings for
marine and industrial use and has 22 manufacturing plants
and over 100 administrative offices worldwide
with sales reaching
in excess of one billion dollars. Mr. Ioannides has been a
member of the Chamber for over 20 years. During
those years
he has held various positions on the Executive Board. He holds
a BS degree in Economics from Brooklyn College and an
MBA
in Marketing from Pace University.
Mr. Mitropoulos graduated from the merchant
Marine Academy in Greece in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science
in Marine Engineering.
He served as an officer in the Greek
Navy from 1981-1983. After his sea experience Mr. Mitropoulos
attended the London School of
Foreign Trade where he graduated
in 1986 with a degree in International Shipping and Finance.
He then returned to Greece and
worked for a shipping company
as a Vice President, where his duties included management
and operation of vessels. In
1993 he moved to the USA where
he joined A.L. Burbank (Shipbrokers) Ltd, one of the leading
ship brokerage companies worldwide.
Mr. Mitropoulos stayed
with A.L. Burbank as vice president for seven years.
In May of 2000, together with his partners,
he formed his own company, Compass Maritime Services, LLC.
The company specializes in the sale and purchase
of vessels
and Shipping Finance.
Mr. Mitropoulos and his wife Patricia reside
in Upper Saddle River, NJ with their two children Christina
8 and Peter 5.
He is on the Board of Directors of the Hellenic-
American Chamber of Commerce where he is currently serving
as Vice President.
Mr. Gregory is the Vice President of John
S. Latsis (USA), Inc. John S. Latsis is a leading Greek Company
dealing with Banking,
Shipping and Petrochemical Industries.
John C. Stratakis is a partner at Poles, Tublin, Patestides
& Stratakis, LLP, a New York law firm founded in 1957,
which specializes
in maritime and real estate matters. The
firm represents many Greek and Greek-American businesses and
individual in their legal
and business affairs. John’s
practice focuses on corporate work, ship finance and real
estate transactions. He has been with the
firm since 1994,
after having served as law clerk to the Hon. Nicholas Tsoucalas,
a judge on the U.S. Court of International Trade.
Apart from
the ractice of law, he also writes articles based on his interviews
of prominent Greek Americans in the Greek American
Review,
a monthly magazine. John is married to Corina Gerontis, a
pediatric ophthalmologist based on Long Island, where they
live
with their seven-month-old son, Christopher.
Michael C. Xylas, Esq. Is a 1987 cum laude graduate of the
Syracuse University School of Management, majoring in Transportation
and Distribution Management and Marketing Management. He graduated
from Fordham University School of Law in 1990 and was
admitted
to the New Jersey Bar in 1990 and the New York Bar in 1991.
From 1990 to 1992, Michael worked in federal
government practice as a law clerk to the Honorable Bernard
Newman, a Senior
Judge in the United States District Court
for the Southern District of New York – by designation.
Thereafter, from 1992 to 1995,
he entered private practice
as an associate in the New York office of Ross & Hardies
– a full service law firm. His experience at
Ross &
Hardies focused on bankruptcy and lender liability with an
emphasis on real estate developer/debtor representation. In
1995, Michael became a partner with the practice of Xylas
& Associates, LLP, integrating his previous experience
in the real
estate area towards commercial and residential
real estate transactions, leasing and mortgage financing.
His practice area has
further expanded into the corporate
practice area with an emphasis on small business representation
and transactions.
On the entrepreneurial side, Michael remains
a principal with Suffolk Realty Inc., a family owned business
concentrating on the administration
and management of income
producing condominium real estate, and with American Life
Safety Systems, LLC, a consulting business working with
insurance
companies in the areas of commercial and residential loss
control and underwriting.
As the Bank of Cyprus’ Chief Representative Officer
for North America, Ms. Zaharo Sofianou is the liaison between
the Bank
and its correspondent banks and clients in the United
States. In addition, she also represents the Bank’s
centers in Cyprus,
Greece and the U.K., Ms. Sofianou regularly
discusses international financial market and foreign exchange
trends and maintains
contact with Banking regulators at the
State and Federal levels.
Prior to joining the Bank of Cyprus, Ms.
Sofianou was Senior Foreign Exchange Economist at Brown Brothers
Harriman & Co.,
from 1994 to 1998. Between 1983 and 1994,
Ms. Sofianou was Senior International Economist at Lehman
Brothers, Inc. She
spent three years at Data Resources, Inc.
where she helped to re-estimate and re-specify the DRI Macro
Economic Model of the
U.S. Economy and was in charge of the DRI Banking Sector of the U.S. Economy. From 1979 to 1980
Ms. Sofianou was at the National Bureau of
Economic Research.

John Rigas, born in Wellsville, New York
in 1924, is the founder, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer
and President of Adelphia
Communications Corporation. He is
also President of each of the Corporations’ subsidiaries.
A cable industry pioneer,
John Rigas started his first cable
system in 1952 in the north central Pennsylvania community
of Coudersport. Still headquartered
in Coudersport, Adelphia,
through its subsidiaries and affiliates, today serves over
2 million subscribers in twelve states.
Mr. Grigoriadis academic career began at
The American College of Greece. There he received a Bachelor
of
Science in Finance and Accounting. He then moved on to
The American University, in Washington DC, where
he obtained
a Masters Degree in International Finance. From there Mr. Grigoriadis continued on to attend the
New York Institute
of Finance in New York, New York were he studied Portfolio
Management.
Mr. Dandapani attended Cornell University
were he achieved a Masters Degree in Hotel Management. He
is now a certified hospitality accountant executive.

which can be located in the midtown area of Manhattan. Apple
Core Hotels offers all new rooms equipped with
Internet access web TV, hair dryers, coffee makers (free coffee & continental

Mr. Parlamis was born on May 29, 1940 in
Brooklyn, New York. He is a professional engineer, general
contractor. He married Marguerite Rose Koskinas on
August
21, 1966. He lives at 128 Downey Drive, Tenafly, NJ 07670.

Loumidis S.A. was established in Greece
in 1920 and instantly the “Loumidis” name became
synonymous to Greek Coffee. In 1992, “Loumidis Foods
Inc.”
was incorporated in the United States in order
to better promote the Greek products, not only to the ethnic
market, but to the American market as well.

part of our Festival of the Aegean (Athens, Syros,

Paros, Santorini, Crete) with our Opera Aegean and ELYSIUM
Chamber Music Series. Lastly, MidAmerican Products has a record
label named Elysium Recordings, which is distributed worldwide
by Qualiton Imports International; and an artist management

Mr. Maimis educational background consists
of a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Polytechnic
Institute of New York obtained in 1984.
Mr. Maimis is affiliated
with New York University – Lecturer Real Estate and
Construction Division, the American Society of Civil Engineers,
the Project
Management Institute, and the Polytechnic Institute
of New York – Alumni Association.

Ilias Pananidis is a founding partner of

Nicos A. Stephanou is and investment banker
in the Mergers & Acquisitions group of Credit Suisse First
Boston. A native of Cyprus,
he graduated magna cum laude from
the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Economics.
His previous work experience
includes stints in equity research
and technology M&A in San Francisco. Nicos served his
two-year long military service in Cyprus with
the rank of
second lieutenant.

Ona Spiridellis is a versatile executive
with significant experience in a variety of business and non-profit
organizations.
Achievements in general management, relationship
development, sales and marketing, administration, operations,
public relations,
government affairs, fund-raising and philanthropy.
Her public relation activities are centered around Greek-American
or Cypriot-American
projects. In 1992 she was a candidate
for U.S. House of Representatives for the 11th Congressional
District.
He started his college career at the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki. He received a BS Degree in Physics.
He then went on to obtain a
MS Degree from the University
of Pennsylvania.
Spiro Dongaris was born in Greece in 1962. He Co-founded Athenica
Environmental Services, Inc. in 1988. Received an M.S. in
Environmental Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology
in 1994.
Mr. & Mrs. Efstathios Valiotis
are great benefactors of the Holy Cross Community in Whitestone,
N.Y.

Mr. Anthony Couloukoundis
a life long member and a director of the Chamber passsed away
