THE HISTORICAL MEANING OF THE EPIC OF OCTOBER 28, 1940-41
by
DR. CHRISTOS P. IOANNIDES
Director, Center for Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies, Queens College, CUNY
In the long course of Greek history, there have been certain events that marked the fate of
Hellenism.  Some events represent glorious victories, while others represent retreat or defeat.
On October 28, 1940, such an event represented both.  The initial victory over Fascist Italy
was followed by the defeat of Greece by Nazi Germany.  Still, from this defeat the Greek
nation emerged morally victorious.  While the rest of Europe offered little or no resistance to the
Axis powers, Greece put up a heroic resistance, one that won the admiration of the rest of the
world.  A wave of philhellenism swept the United States while the Greek American community
mobilized to assist the struggling Greek people.  The Second World War and its aftermath
shaped the future of Greece as it moved on to become what it is today.

Consul General of Greece
